For the entire month of April the routine was do carve a song out of the diary entries, and would only be for one month. Routines are hard to break! I couldn't resist this one because it's a song whose lyrics come from song titles or lines from songs. I'm not sure if it's plagiaristic or clever parody, but I would argue it's the latter. They are "cameos", as well as an ironic juxtaposition between war (Anne Frank) and postwar Beatles.

Seeing the light: Caravaggio steals the Netflix show
An update to $XDGRUNTIMEDIR series.
The other say I logged in lightdm and was greeted with a black screen.
When I tried running Hyprland in TTY, it crashed again.
Th log was yapping about WlBackend is null. Last time, this was due to missing XDG runtime dir env variable.
This time, it turns out the user/1001 directory is now owned by lightdm. It was previously owned by user.
The fix was to add the non-root user to lightdm group. Not sure if thats safe.

Keith Haring entry 4/29/1977
I checked to see if both directories were symlinks and they were not.
So, I went back to TTY, stopped lightdm, updated my incorrect /run/user/$UID to lightdm one and BINGO!!
The poor thing was trying to find compositor from an old socket file.
Lets see what comes next!
First week of May. Sorry for the photo quality, this shimmery green stamp ink is hard to photograph. :dasweat:
So I have been very very unsuccessful in setting up SDDM but I got lucky with LightDM
As it turns out I still need to learn how to enable Wayland support.
Yesterday I learned I had to kldload amdgpu for my AMD iGPU to kick in.
This is a new journey as a FreeBSD beginner with some Linux knowledge
A big shoutout to freebsd-wifibox developer for making it possible for me to use WiFi on my laptop in FreeBSD 14
I love you with all my heart
Today's riff is derived from two entries, one going back to 2002 with the release of Mullholland Drive, one of my favorite films. Lynch reminds you that filmmaking is an art no different from making abstract paintings. The tune would be more of a "vintage" rocker. It's interesting that the girl in the diner is a "would-be" silhouette, suggesting that she could be a silhouetted figure in a Roger Brown painting.
May done! The first week of May next. :daphew:

4/24/1997: Ordered 56K modem. Will increase surfing speed x4.
This was a major increase in modem speed. The computer was a Dell Pentium 90, with 8MB of RAM and a 14.4K modem. (Could we go back to using a "dial-up" connection when no one's really dialing) You might want a slow lane that costs more to prevent spending too much time on the internet. We think it's social media that's addictive, but it's actually the internet.)
Good morning mastofriends! My diary apps todays prompt is what are my thoughts on growing older Well, my thoughts get really jumbled and quickly forgotten in the process of growing older, so I am not able to answer that.
Catching up on a couple weeks of layouts. Been falling behind on journal stuff lately, trying not to beat myself up about it, and just get on with it. I really like how the black and purple spread came out!
Today's sonic abstraction, "The Hidden Track", with snips from diary entries for 4/21.

How we love company and the shared enjoyment of food, Sam.
And I love the way you place the "both" after the first of the two people you meet. "Sir Wms. both and Mr Castle" has a magic of commonality that "both Sir Wms. and Mr Castle" never can achieve. You are a true stylist, Sam.
when did the plight of others become just another scroll on my screen
i may have become desensitized to the news, but recognizing this is perhaps the first step in reclaiming the compassion and engagement i fear i've lost
each story, whether it painted a picture of chaos or hope, seemed to skim across my consciousness like stones across the surface of a still pond, leaving no ripples behind
it's a strange insensitivity, a sort of armour against the relentless barrage of events
i wonder, when did my empathy begin to wane in the face of constant exposure
i found myself reflecting on a curious numbness that seems to have crept over me, a sensation i hadn't noticed until it nearly consumed me whole
like any other day, i found myself scrolling through the avalanche of news updates / headlines
but unlike before, where news of disaster, political upheaval, or a heart-warming tale of human kindness would stir something in me
today, there was nothing

creativity arrives in unpredictable, vibrant bursts
moments that cannot be summoned at will
the force of lightning that illuminates the path
the first drop of rain that dares to fall before a raging storm
the sudden shower of a summer rain
it washes over the drought of ideas
with a refreshing shower that invigorates the soul
and just as quickly, the burst of brilliance recedes
leaving us to navigate the aftermath of inspiration

"It was a foggy afternoon when I decided to call on Dr. Rank.
...
I felt that from such an abundance of life, I must make a selection of what might interest him. He had made a specialty of the "artist." He was interested in the artist. Would he be interested in a woman who had lived out all the themes he wrote about, the Double, Illusion and Reality, Incestuous Loves Through Literature, Creation and Play. All the myths (return to the father after many adventures and obstacles), all the dreams. I had lived out the entire contents of his profound studies so impetuously that I had had no time to understand them, to sift them. I was confused and lost. In trying to live out all of my selves...
...
He considered neurosis a failed work of art, the neurotic a failed artist. Neurosis, he had written, was a manifestation of imagination and energy gone wrong. Instead of a fruit or a flower, I had borne obsessions and anxieties. It was this concept which appealed to me, that he did not call it an illness, but, as in nature, a misbegotten object which might have equal beauty and fascination as the relatives of more legitimate and noble birth.
...
"You tried to live your life like a myth. Everything you dreamed or fantasied, you carried out. You are a myth-maker."
"I am tired of lies and deformities. I need absolution. I must confess to you the mood which preceded my talk with you. I made this note on the train: 'On my way to see Dr. Rank I am planning impostures, cheatings, tricks.' I begin to invent what I will tell Dr. Rank, instead of coordinating truths. I begin to rehearse speeches, attitudes, gestures, inflections, expressions.
...
I see myself talking and I am sitting within Rank, judging me. What should I say to create such and such effect I meditate lies as others meditate confessions. Yet I am going to him to confess, to get help in the solution of my conflicts, which are too numerous, and which I do not succeed in mastering by writing. ..."

Today, I'm spending much needed time in my bullet journal. Looking forward to the rest of the month ahead.
I like to draw mini art pieces in the calendar pages of my journal.
I'm always fascinated to know what sort of stationery journaling activities & interests others enjoy
