Haven't found much in the Qt/KDE

Haven't found much in the Qt/KDE

Haven't found much in the Qt/KDE world actually, except for a few things that never got off the ground.

In the GTK-world Rednotebook looks allright. It does store the data in plain textfiles, one for each month - which means that migrating to and from it might be tiresome but quite easy.

That it is created in Python makes it somewhat easy portable (though it must allready have a port) for other systems like the BSDs.

Diary for the last 3 days

Not to get into too much detail, but a bunch of long trips back-to-back to see family and to address some administrative obligations. Lots of driving which was mostly not done by me because the long-term lung infection is attempting to re-establish itself, meaning a lot of coughing of green gunk and a general need for lots of sleep.

Rare bits of spare time include working on a RSS-to-Everything* reposting gateway, which of course I am writing from scratch because I dont expect a third party service to be able to deliver the level of control that I desire over content look & feel & appearance also why pay for something which I can have fun building, instead So at some point I intend to blog here and have it selectively auto-replicated to Threads, Twitter, Bluesky and LinkedIn I suspect Facebook will need to remain a manual operation unless I start doing a page properly, which Im not yet inclined to do. (Edit: this blog already auto-federates to Mastodon / ActivityPub as so thats already sorted.)

Toddler was dropped off by P at daycare at 8am. Since that time Ive washed 5 loads of laundry, and hung them all plus one more from last night, sorted 4 loads of dry laundry, plus done 2 loads of dishes and a bunch of other domestic stuff. Its actually quite nice to have mindless time to do all this multitasking and yet background-think about how to solve code and writing challenges whilst doing it. Doesnt leave much time for anything else until the evening, though.

Hi there -

I really love the journal/diary program Captains Log for SFOS but now need to find something similar for the desktop

Is there any good journal/diary programs available for the Linux desktop

They ask the strangest things on r/Journaling sometimes. Usually it starts with "Can I (do this)" or "Is it OK if I (do this)"
Dudes, it's your freaking journal. You can journal about your poo if you like. (just don't share it on social media please)
Maybe I am an old GenX person but I find these requests super weird. Like who cares if you are doing it wrong I once had someone tell me I was doing bullet journal wrong and I told her to eff off

Mind The Gap

J.G. Ballard's line from the novel High-Rise came to mind as being in the "gap": "Looking up at the endless tiers of balconies, he felt uneasily like a visitor to a malevolent zoo where terraces of vertically mounted cages contained creatures of random and ferocious cruelty."

I reckon my best chance is to stay in . So anywhere around Gulf of St Lawrence, , Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia. Between 1850-1900. The Holy Grail would be a or chronicling purchases and application regimes. Annual purchases would be a start!

11/9/2009: Restoration of a local WWI memorial. When the protective sheaths blow over the sculpture it clings in interesting ways. (Also interesting how the ropes are bound at the ankles). 11/9/2009 was also the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

One of my other blogs has had a title change, yes already, and an ever so slight usage change, the blog formerly (not for very long) known as Pops Safe Haven has now been renamed as and is a not so interesting journal of my day to day life, it will sit alongside this, my main blog Pops the Passive Voyeurs Blog and will operate as my journal.

The posts on this journal blog will consist of status updates and journal entries following my daily activities, events, thoughts and feelings as the day progresses, it wont be terribly interesting, its my journal and I dont lead a very interesting life

Diary for Today

Another toddler-centric day, after a medium-rough night (4 out of 10 on a scale of roughness) dealing with an occasionally squawking kid who passed out in a nest of blankets rather than be put to bed properly. Since wakeup its basically been a duvet day for the kid because the weather has been vile, and teething means that shes feeling a little sad and in regular need of hugs.

The fix for WP Supercache Accept handling got pushed so hopefully this blog will soon start to behave itself on ActivityPub services, but it really looks like Mastodon servers are not enthusiastic about recovering either federation or old content after a webserver outage. As I posted on monday, it seems that which is not a good quality for something that is meant to replace large, centralised platforms.

Vexed about a delivery which failed to turn up, but hopefully more about that tomorrow, instead.

Diary for Today

Not much to tell today: up early, 1.5x loads of laundry, messed-up putting out the bins so missed this fortnights pickup for rubbish but were at less than 50% so its probably okay. Took the toddler out for swings and slides and exploring woodlands and running up and down and up and down and up and down hills, which was nice.

Then an afternoon of feeding, watering and grooming aforementioned until she finally had a 1 hour long tantrum before bed and passed out.

P did an awesome Butter Chicken curry for dinner none of the local ones weve tried are genuine, all being far too sweet for some unspecified reason. This one was with a thick and deeply spicy sauce, and a little heat. Excellent stuff.

Elsewhere: , but rather than make the same mistake I did last time, Ive set up a separate instance to host all the friends stuff, keeping it separate from this blogging instance. I suspect it will be a cleaner implementation that way.

Although I prefer journaling by hand, I have to admit that digital journaling is far more practical, safer and more secure, and I've been journaling so much more.

Diary for Today

Getting the blog back together has been the most tech fun that Ive had in the past 6 months, even though (or possibly because) its been on the back burner to do so for literally 2 years. The impending EOL of the old servers WordPress software stack made it essential to update, and in the process gave me the opportunity to redress (i.e. throw away) several of the fediverse mistakes which I made in my early attempt viz: dont try to install Mastodon at home, people, unless you love running a messy Ruby stack with a bunch of un-necessary cruft which a sole-user instance does not need.

Theres more work to do: the DMZ and EOTK proxies need a rebuild, but that can wait for some other work on the UPS to happen, first. Then at some point I also have to rebuild the ADSB listeners.

Today has been my first proper experience of our toddler got invited to a birthday party and it was great, if exhausting, even only as a spectator-parent 12 to 15 kids running around the local village hall with some setup/teardown (chairs, tables, balloons, bunting) to assist with. I think the Amazon review would be something like

**** would do again, but bring paracetamol and food, perhaps alcohol

I had some fun yesterday: our toddlers daycare/preschool was literally throwing away an which was broken we asked if we could have it, and it turned out that the steering column was broken (and so the steering wheel kept falling off) and a few bits were missing. I jetwashed it, rebuilt the steering column and then yesterday 3D-printed a new ignition key, door lock, fuel filler-cap and mounting (all from Printables & Thingiverse) plus a self-designed personalised license plate. Its now looking a lot cooler, and were thinking about overhauling the dash with nice retro speedo and fuel gauges.

It was very, very popular at todays party.

There are a bunch of DIY projects on at home, too: a cargobike refit, new TV antenna, replacing the main UPS backup battery, toddler bedroom carpeting, and pathway lighting these are all great but take up non-parenting-time which is a deeply valuable resource, so I am currently running home life like an engineering manager, trying to work out what is most impactful to do and balancing long-term projects against short-term ones like clear the laundry backlog. The family is already running on Trello, and I fear that if it gets more complex we may have to move up to Jira.

Then theres the question of The Book I already have a concept and more than enough notes, and Ive made a start (actually, the second or third start) on an introduction. I think Ive got something (possibly) unique to say about infosec: where security, privacy and identity all come from, and where they are commonly misunderstood. If youve read or , youll get a sense of a couple of the chapters.

The main challenge is to work out who my audience is, and best how to write for them. Maybe thrashing out some ideas and charting progress in public on this blog would help motivate me, because at the moment I have to fit writing in during those rare gaps when Im suddenly massively awake at 4am, which is happening too often at the moment.

What do you reckon

Late-afternoon November light, Navy Pier, Chicago.

I've always loved the idea of a digital journal or diary in the style of social media. Where I just pop in a post....but for my eyes only. Does anyone know if something like this already exists. Open source. Android and Linux. Usable offline, but syncs while online. Allows insert of images and map locations.

Saw a YouTube video with the title "My no nonsense journal".
Video was about her decorating said & showing off her expensive pens. If that's no nonsense I am a :dancingpanda: People r showing off their pretty entries on .
Am so annoyed by this - like it's some kind of popularity contest.
I get that it can be a creative outlet but omg why r we making something healing so competitive and performative
shouldnt come with such pressure

Michigan Avenue, Chicago

When we were living in Winchester Halloween became great fun once our son was able to participate.

The first time round in 2006 it completely caught me by surprise. The door bell rang while I was trying to get my baby son to sleep and I wasnt happy with the noise, so I simply switched the bell off. The next day I found someone had thrown an egg at our window: the infamous trick part of Halloween trick and treating. Dried egg is horrible to remove. Luckily, the following years when we still chose to ignore the event, there was no more tricking.

When our son was old enough to take part with friends we taught the children to be considerate as not everyone in the neighbourhood was happy with this event. The rules were as follows:

Every Halloween started with carving pumpkins. Our son of course wanted to carve his own one every year and got used to handling a kitchen knife safely pretty quickly.

As far as I remember the first time(s) round he wanted to dress up as Optimus Prime (from the Transformers movies). One year he was a Dalek (from Dr Who). Later he was always the Grim Reaper. I also dressed up to walk around with the children.

Among many other people who kindly indulged the children, we met the friendliest old lady witch possible who gave out loads of sweets and was very chatty. We saw many great pumpkin carvings. One time was especially memorable, there was an angler with a foot on his hook (bone sticking out), and a huge spider coming down onto our group of kids while they were distracted by a smoke machine! I think much screaming ensued.

The weirdest thing happening was finding a fake bloody lower arm behind our bin.

Each time I had great fun decorating our place, I really liked spiderwebs with spiders and balloon ghosts that were dimly glowing from the inside. Our door bell could play sound files, so I set it to things like witches laughing and put it in the shed right next to our main door. We also had our own Halloween party for children once, with lots of grisly food.

Here are some photos from those years:

"3 True Scary Halloween Stories for a Creepy October Night"

Today, on a walk through our neighbourhood, I found a little wooden flower bench which was sitting on the pavement with a sign that it was waiting for a new owner (zu verschenken). How did the kind person who put it there know that this was exactly what I was looking for as I had lost the space for my plants in front of the window because of my rearranging the furniture I had put two small tables there temporarily and was looking on Amazon for ideas of what to get. Problem now solved!

It is well worth reading the article and seeing the photos for yourself. This war between the terrorist group Hamas and the corrupt occupying govt of Israel is hurting and killing average everyday people who just want to live their lives.

"There is no sign of this war ending. No one in power speaks of a cease-fire. On the news, theres discussion of a few hours truce for humanitarian purposes, to let in a little and .

I find it unbearable to listen to the way they talk about us, decide things for us, without ever asking any of us."
Atef Abu Saif

"I asked Yasser 15 yr old son to stay in his grandparents house. The logic is that in wartime, we should all sleep in different places, so that if part of the is killed, another part lives.

The UN are getting more crowded w/ displaced families. The hope is that the flag will save them, though in previous wars, that hasnt been the case."

"The city has become a wasteland of rubble and debris. Beautiful buildings fall like columns of smoke. I often think about the time I was shot as a kid, during the first , and how my mother told me I actually died for a few minutes before being brought back to life. Maybe I can do the same this time, I think."
